Astronaut Reveals Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of Deluge of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her battle with depression after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also featured well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a public message, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the days following the landing.
She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said everything she had worked for – from her studies and years of training to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was drowned out under the tide of misogyny.
She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.
Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after an attack during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
The Fog Begins to Lift
In the time since fulfilling her dream, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the supporters whose kindness pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she wrote.
She added that even with the backlash, important benefits had resulted from the mission, including spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
About the Mission
The fully automated New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that passed the edge of space.
The diverse crew also comprised experts in different industries.
The enterprise behind the mission is a private space firm founded by a well-known tech mogul.
