Shot-stopper Mary Earps has openly declared that her freshly launched personal story was not created to “damage others” and expressed concern that public reaction has been “misinterpreted.”

Controversial Comments and Supporters’ Disapproval

The ex-Lionesses goalkeeper, who was instrumental in the Euro 2022 victory, received criticism from fans and Chelsea boss Sonia Bompastor after making remarks about past Lioness Hannah Hampton and head coach Sarina Wiegman.

In her memoir, Earps wrote that she told Wiegman she was “supporting poor attitude” by reinstating Hampton to the England squad after dropping her for being “unruly and inconsistent.”

“The response has been immense to see how parts were misrepresented,” Earps told reporters.

Clarifying Her Purpose

Earps clearly stated that the autobiography was not designed to hurt others.

• “My memoir wasn’t created to tear anyone down in any shape or form.”
• “That doesn’t reflect my character as a human being.”
• “This reflects reality. It has consequences. It is not entertainment.”

She also discussed how the women’s game has evolved into a realm that has become “a bit like entertainment,” where individual stories are analyzed in detail for public amusement.

Earps wrote about losing her spot as the starting goalkeeper before the European Championship and how that strained her relationship with Wiegman.

She stated it was “not an abrupt downfall” in their connection—just a clash of viewpoints—and she maintains respect for the coach.

“There were things that occurred during that period that I wish had happened differently,” Earps remarked.

Personal Struggles

In her memoir, Earps opened up about the mistreatment she experienced at school, describing it as a “extremely difficult” part to go back to because it revived past pain.

• “I just assumed that people were against me for the majority of my years.”
• “I was trained to feel like no one truly cared.”

These emotions led to anxiety episodes, and Earps shared she struggled with physical appearance and turned to alcohol during the lockdown period to cope with mental health struggles.

Relationships and Goals

Earps openly discussed that she is in a relationship with a woman and expressed pride about her relationship.

She also mentioned her hopes for motherhood and revealed she has undergone egg freezing for potential family planning.

“I would love to be a mum and have a household,” Earps commented. “I enjoy my football career, but I wish to have a child at a later stage.”

Earps portrayed the egg-freezing procedure as “intense and intrusive” and pushed for more studies tailored to sports professionals undergoing comparable treatments.

During her remarks, Earps reiterated that she has no regrets about her professional journey or life decisions, stressing that she always proceeded with principle.
