No professional sports organization promotes competitive balance as effectively as the NFL: it defines their identity. However, after the first ten matchups during the current schedule, this doesn't represent a landscape featuring uniform distribution separating contenders, pretenders, and middle-of-the-pack clubs. Rather, we see a situation where the bulk of franchises are merely fine.

NFC Clarity

In the NFC, at least, the picture becomes more distinct. The Rams and Seahawks (each holding 7-2 records) appear to be the most balanced franchises in football, and delivered decisive victories in their weekend matchups. The 6-2 Eagles despite their struggles still have among the most gifted lineups throughout football, comparable to the Packers franchise (five wins, two losses, one tie). The Lions also (6-3 standing), despite their uneven performances on offense and defense and have been dealing with internal staff conflicts, have proven they can hammer quality opponents. For each of these squads, it's straightforward to construct a Super Bowl path.

AFC Confusion

In the AFC however, the playoff picture is a jumbled mess. The current division frontrunners through ten weeks: the Colts, Patriots, Broncos (all at 8-2) and Steelers (5-4). Read that again. Kansas City isn't there. Not the Bills. Neither Ravens nor Bengals. The usual contenders, backed by premier quarterback talent, have either obvious team deficiencies or have been hit by injuries.

Competitive Balance System

In some ways, this represents the NFL's perfect scenario. However, witnessing this season's top AFC teams in the AFC continues to seem unusual. Components of every squad suggest title potential, yet not completely. If you were asked to lock in your AFC Championship game picks right now, could you assuredly pick any of the four division leaders?

Squad Examinations

Indianapolis Colts

Beginning with the Colts, Daniel Jones hasn't yet achieved complete disaster level. However, recent performances have raised concerns. He has returned to giving away possessions and failing against blitzes. He suffered seven sacks facing Atlanta on Sunday, and experienced a brief period during which he tossed a pick and coughed up the ball thrice. This follows he turned the ball over five times against the Steelers.

The Colts’ offense excelled during early games since Jones evaded the disaster plays. The running back and protection unit ensure Indianapolis remains capable of overcoming periodic mistakes, as they did in Berlin. Yet Jones going back to his historically mistake-heavy play would finish championship hopes.

Patriots Examination

The Patriots seem somewhat similar. A year ago, they were considered jokes. Today, they stand as the NFL's most pleasant shock and the hottest team in football after seven straight wins. Had it not been for fumbling away a manageable matchup versus the Steelers, they’d be sitting a 9-1 record with the best record. In the prior year, they seemed veteran and plodding. Now they’re young, fast and unafraid. Nevertheless, one cannot overlook the ease of the Patriots' matchups. They've encountered the easiest slate across the NFL, and there have still been cracks. The signal-caller has been brought down thirty-five times – among the highest totals – and some of the shots he endured during the game appeared dangerous. Over time, that punishment compounds.

Denver Broncos

The Broncos are also 8-2, and it still feels that they're barely surviving. Bo Nix has shown inconsistency, with the attack struggling, while the defensive unit provides all the heavy lifting. Without serviceable quarterback play, Denver cannot intimidate anyone in the postseason. The Chargers are also contending in the AFC West at 7-2, however, health issues within their blocking corps will make it tough for extended playoff success.

Pittsburgh Situation

Then we have the Steelers, surprisingly atop the Northern division even after suffering a decisive loss to Los Angeles on Sunday night. They have a negative point differential, their defense too often disappears, and Aaron Rodgers’ limitations given his veteran status continue to show up. They maintain a 5-4 record while surviving, yet Baltimore, with Lamar Jackson healthy again with manageable games ahead, are on a three-game win streak. This development isn't entirely shocking that the Ravens have pulled to within one game of Pittsburgh, but how rapidly this occurred represents criticism toward the Steelers' uneven performances. Considering the Ravens opened with a 1-5 record and currently seem likely to claim the title reveals much about the conference as a whole.

Established Contenders

Baltimore constitutes part of the Big Three – joined by Buffalo and Kansas City – driven by elite quarterback play, who could still create the most fear in opposing teams if they qualified. They’re the No One Wants To See ‘Em teams, however, both franchises persistently undermine themselves.

Bills Struggles

Last week, the Bills were riding high after beating the Chiefs. During Sunday's action they experienced among the season's worst defeats this year. They didn't merely fall to the Dolphins; they were embarrassed, losing 30-13 as visitors. It was Miami’s first win versus Buffalo in over three years.
