Milei Statuette, Anyone? Meloni to Auction Off World Leaders' Gifts for Charity

Getting rid of unwanted offerings might be seen as somewhat rude – except if it's done for a noble purpose.

A Charitable Auction

Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell around 270 items bestowed upon her by international figures during her travels. This unusual assortment could include items such as a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gilded heels.

The collection, together, have an approximate value of €800,000. They are scheduled to be sold in a public auction by a Rome-based fine art auction house. A date is yet to be set, although the intention is to hold the auction before Christmas, with all funds raised benefiting various charities.

Storage Room Treasures

The presents are said to be stored in a repository on the third floor of the prime minister's official office. Reports indicate that Meloni furthermore planning to auction off gifts received by her predecessors that have been gathering dust over a long period.

The full gift list is yet to be officially released, but a glimpse were revealed earlier this year when an 11-page list of items received was submitted to lawmakers. The question raised whether a statutory cap on gift value was being followed. By law, a prime minister must declare presents worth more than €300.

An International Assortment of Gifts

The collection includes:

  • A woven wrap from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A sari from Kerala from India's prime minister.
  • A case of jewelry from the president of Slovakia.
  • A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
  • A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
  • A digital device from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Watercolour paintings from Moldova.
  • Various other items including makeup, a skateboard, and numerous carpets received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Possibly the oddest gifts were the Milei figurine and the exotic footwear," observers have said.

Political Context

Meloni has been credited, mostly from her own political sphere, with winning over global statesmen and positioning Italy as a significant player on the world stage once again.

The forthcoming sale symbolizes a distinct method to manage the state presents that are collected during a time in office.
