Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system caused widespread flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of millions of people nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team saved 14 individuals stranded on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official explained. One resident frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

According to meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service stated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people with another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists have found that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that severe weather events result in approximately millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration last week due to the severe damage from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
