Shoaib Bashir Earns Unexpected Selection in England's Test Series Squad

The English team has opted for a 12-man selection just two days before the opening Test match, with the 22-year-old spinner earning a unexpected spot.

The 22-year-old’s inclusion suggests that the visiting team will wait until the morning of the initial match to decide whether the venue pitch suit a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spin bowler.

Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the selected group, showing there are no concerns about their fast bowler's fitness.

Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse complete the bowling group, with Carse expected to be omitted if Bashir makes the final team.

Pitch Factors Favor Seamers

The England coach had been expected to opt for an pace-only lineup on a venue that has hosted five past matches.

During these games, the majority of dismissals have been taken by seamers, with only a small number to spin.

Among these spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has claimed 29, while all visiting spinners combined have only eight.

On a ground known for its pace and bounce, and whose groundsman, the pitch preparer, pledged that these characteristics are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team relying on fast bowlers is still the probable decision.

Alternative Choices Weighed

There had been rumors that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the team to offer some slow bowling while also strengthening the batting lineup.

However the coach has opted to stick with the young spinner, having said earlier this year that he would be his first-choice spinner for the series.

Earlier, Nathan Lyon commented on Bashir as “OK,” saying that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still England’s best spinner.”

“It is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for people who haven’t done it in the previous in these conditions,” Lyon remarked of spin bowling in matches Down Under.

“I won't reveal my strategies so they perform and excel out here.”
