Position a few ice blocks on top of the soil. The concept posits when the ice melts, it steadily provides water, providing the roots ample time to absorb it and avoiding soggy earth.
Examining the Practice
This approach functions best for little planters and plants sensitive to excess moisture, for instance Phalaenopsis. But, a great many of warmth-loving houseplants dislike cold temperatures. A plant's root structures evolved for heat, and icy water can damage or injure them. Ambient climate has a big factor in this method's efficacy: in a warm room, the ice will thaw very quickly, providing minimal benefit, while in a colder area it may remain excessively, lowering the temperature of the roots and slowing absorption. Always ensure ice cubes are frozen from fresh, potable water and never place them in contact with the base or delicate roots.
Putting it to Test
This was tried on a moth orchid. A couple of cubes per week kept the roots nicely moist and avoided saturation. However, using the same method on a Calathea resulted in discoloration at the tips of the leaves, a definite sign of chill damage.
Our Assessment
The ice cube technique may succeed for Phalaenopsis, yet it is not ideal for most warm-climate indoor plants and depends significantly on ambient conditions. Thus, this trick is not endorsed; tepid water applied carefully continues to be the safest method to properly moisten your leafy friends.
