The Duke of York relinquishes his title as York's Duke.

Royal figure under scrutiny
The royal has encountered increasing pressure over his links with Jeffrey Epstein.

Prince Andrew is surrendering his titles, such as the Duke of York, he has declared in a personal statement.

He has been under growing scrutiny over his associations with disgraced financier Epstein, with demands for the monarchy to take steps against him.

That now looks to have resulted in the prince deciding to of his own accord hand back his designations and to relinquish involvement of the Order of the Garter.

In his statement he said he continued to "vigorously deny the accusations against me".

"In talks with the King, and my close and broader family, we have decided the continued accusations about me take away from the responsibilities of the monarch and the royal household," said a statement from Prince Andrew.

"I have chosen, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first.

"I support my decision five years ago to stand back from royal engagements.

"With the monarch's approval, we feel I must now go a step further. I will therefore no longer employ my honor or the awards which have been granted to me. As I have said before, I firmly refute the claims against me."

He has faced a series of issues, among them a lawsuit he resolved with the plaintiff, inquiries about his money matters and his involvement with an suspected intelligence operative.

He will stay a prince - but will discontinue to be the York's Duke, a honor granted from his parent, the late Queen Elizabeth.

Andrew had already stopped to be a "active member" and had forfeited the use of his HRH title and no longer participated at public engagements. His position now will be even more reduced.

His ex-wife will be known as Sarah Ferguson and no longer York's Duchess, but their daughters will persist to have the honor of princess.

The royal has faced severe examination over his associations with disgraced financier the financier, more recently involving inquiries about when he had actually cut off communication.

In his media discussion, he had said that he had severed all ties with Jeffrey Epstein after they had been seen together in NYC in December 2010.

But correspondence sent in early 2011 later emerged indicating that Andrew had privately continued in touch with him, for example swapping a note: "Stay in contact and we'll play some more soon!"

There had been mounting annoyance in the monarchy at the scandals that continued to envelop the figure.

Soon a posthumous memoir by Giuffre will be published which is likely to draw further attention on his association with the plaintiff and Jeffrey Epstein.
