During the bulk of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive within a psychic prison built from the memories of the villain Henry. Their quest for a way out in the pivotal sixth episode leads them to witness again a defining event from Henry's childhood—an event that potentially carries the secret to his downfall once and for all.

A Journey Into the Cavern

After locating Max in the mental landscape known as Camazotz, Max reveals she is hiding out in a cave that Henry is terrified of. By leaving the lens cap on a spyglass found in Henry's old home lets Holly see that the danger lies not within the cave. Matching her view to the cut-out, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage.

In this place, they observe a child version of Henry find an wounded, fearful individual. Attempting assistance, the man reacts violently, striking Henry in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly questions through tears. The answer is affirmative, but the act went deeper than a fight for life.

Similar to other plot points this season, the significance of the events in the tunnel was first explored the live show The First Shadow.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Stolen Research

This backstory explains the 1943 event, which reportedly teleported a vessel into a plane dubbed the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.

That survivor's offspring, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this dimensional breach in the Nevada desert. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to give to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. That traitor in the mine shaft is the one who stole the materials.

So, What's in the Case?

Given what is known about the doctor's experiments, the briefcase most likely held some of Captain Brenner's infected blood. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon contact with the blood, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would later pass on to the test subjects under Brenner's care.

A second theory, the case could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it helps stabilize the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry ended up in the Abyss, reappearing 12 hours later as a different person. As a youth, he fights the influence of a dark entity, reminiscent of how Will Byers was controlled by the Mind Flayer in the past.

Confronting Terror

His lasting fear linked to that memory demonstrates how profoundly traumatic the event was for him. Even as he orchestrates the collective consciousness and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. Vecna uses fear, and the narrative points to a climactic battle between the monster and Will, who has overcome his personal demons to become stronger.

This journey has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, potentially giving him a critical advantage in the ultimate battle ahead.
