The teenager has featured in seven matches for Real Madrid, featuring five appearances in the starting lineup.

When an 18-year-old makes club a historic moment in a pivotal European tie against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.

In only his maiden start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the 15-time Champions League winners secured a 3-0 last-16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek return to confirm a last eight place.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch became the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, beating Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy

This talent is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.

He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe youth teams, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they faced the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting he stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, personality and determination he added to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Personality'

During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso invited Pitarch to practice with the senior squad and gave him minutes in the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that led to the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I began playing football, every day you go to train and every day you play a match," stated the player after his first appearance.

"I have just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the planet and in the top tournament."

Given a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he was for four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his place for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opening.

Pitarch has seized it with performances that have defied his youth and experience.

"He is a very quick footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He is extremely energetic, with excellent stamina, effort and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.

"His greatest quality is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand fans might be surprised to see him start in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had total trust in him to perform his normal game.

"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the first team. It's a pleasure to have a player like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through youth setups before entering Real Madrid's famous youth academy.

He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish nationality, giving him the choice to represent either country at senior international level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may appear for different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a competitive full international.

He has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, turning out for both the U19 and under-20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain reached the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are watching his progress with keen attention.

Speaking recently, the player said: "I haven't made my final decision so far. Things are positive with Spain, but I'll make a decision in the near future."

This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine chose La Roja, Brahim decided to represent the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 win at City, which sealed a five-one aggregate success and a last-eight tie with the German champions.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the team pursue trophies to come.

After his notable contributions so far on the Champions League, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.

"The manager handles me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I try not to think about it excessively - I have to earn my playing time on the pitch," he commented after the win at Etihad Stadium.
