UN:Me: An Psychological Horror That Blends Silent Hill and Among Us Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive game where a girl containing several human souls within her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Within her reside four separate personas, all possessing their own fears and motivations. These souls can seize control spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Based on showcased footage, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, though other scenes show the protagonist exploring a abandoned church.
A World of Personal Dread
"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to other people can activate a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The central mechanic involves managing the persona that surfaces at any given time. However, these identities will change against your will as you play. While exploring, each soul's fears become amplified and assault the protagonist in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision
At first glance, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the waiting room have enormous flowers growing from their heads should be. Flowers are a recurring theme, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four souls claims that the physical form belongs to them," explains a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."
Once players believes a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, since each soul can deceive or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The final entity remaining might be a fake. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
