In a major political initiative, Donald Trump’s personal representative will travel to hold discussions with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other European leaders in Berlin this weekend, as Washington seeks a concrete plan to halt the protracted conflict.

Peace Discussions and Ceasefire Efforts

Berlin confirmed it is hosting American and Kyiv representatives for preliminary talks focusing on a possible halt in fighting, before a broader meeting involving EU officials and President Zelenskyy scheduled for Monday. In a public statement, Zelenskyy affirmed the planned meeting with the US representative Steve Witkoff: “A key aspect, I will be holding talks with representatives from President Trump, and there will also be discussions with our European partners, with numerous officials, regarding the foundation of a lasting peace – a political agreement to stop the war,” he noted.

Russian Demands for a Truce

At the same time, Kremlin foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov restated that Russia would only give its blessing to a cessation of hostilities after Ukraine’s military leave areas in the eastern oblast they still control. Ushakov stated that Russian police and national guard troops would stay in parts of the Donbas region should the area were to become a DMZ under a future peace plan – a stipulation widely seen as a non-starter for Kyiv.

Nighttime Strikes Hit Ukraine's Infrastructure

Amid a related escalation, Russia targeted multiple oblasts in Ukraine overnight, focusing on the nation’s energy and port facilities, as stated by President Zelenskyy. He indicated the assaults employed over 450 unmanned aerial vehicles and 30 missiles. With the mercury close to zero degrees, Ukraine’s interior minister, Ihor Klymenko, reported more than a million residents were left without power.

Additionally, an attack on the coastal hub of Odesa led to storage facilities igniting, as stated by a senior Ukrainian official Oleksiy Kuleba. Local authorities stated that two people were wounded in strikes on the surrounding area.

Defense and Aid Developments

Amid mounting concerns about the threat from Russia, Berlin said it will dispatch a team of engineers to Poland to aid in a project to strengthen the country’s eastern border. Poland, a key ally of Ukraine, revealed intentions last year to bolster a significant section of its border. The primary task of the German soldiers will be “engineering activities,” a military representative said.

Regarding a separate event, around 480 people were evacuated from a rail service running between the Polish city of Przemysl and Kyiv following authorities responded to a report concerning a threat. Nobody was hurt, and authorities provided no further details on the nature of the threat. Polish authorities are on high alert due to several incidents to sabotage trains on the line connecting Warsaw to the Ukrainian border.

Elsewhere, Ukrainian naval officials alleged Russian forces of deliberately targeting a commercial ship from Turkey transporting cooking oil to Egypt with a drone on Saturday. The navy said the ship ‘VIVA’ was struck but able to continue its journey, with none of the 11 crew injured.

Finally, Ukraine received 114 prisoners released by Belarus on Saturday, according to the Ukrainian prisoner exchange body. The freed captives will receive medical attention, and any Belarusian citizens who wish will be relocated to Poland or Lithuania.
